- A 55-inch OLED TV weighs 42 pounds on average without the stand.
- OLED TVs are lighter and thinner than LED/LCD TVs.
- OLED TVs are perfectly suited to being wall-mounted.
Back in the day, the old Cathode Ray Tube televisions were extremely heavy. They were certainly too heavy and bulky to be wall mounted!
Obviously technology has moved on and TVs are a lot lighter, but how heavy are OLED TVs and how do they compare with LED/LCD TVs?
Well that’s exactly what you’ll find out in this article.
Let’s get to it.
Here’s how heavy OLED TVs are:
Based on research, a 55-inch OLED TV weighs on average 42 pounds without the stand. The heaviest 55-inch weighs 52.5 pounds, which is the Sony A9F OLED. The lightest 55-inch OLED weighs in at 35.9 pounds which is the LG C8 OLED.
This data is based on the average TV size for North America in 2021 which was 55-inches.
The weight of an OLED depends on the manufacturer and as the size of the TV increases, the weight also increases.
Are OLED TVs heavier than LED TVS?
OLED TVs are heavier than LED TVs. The extra weight in an LED TV is due to the LED backlight.
LED TVs are LCD displays with LED backlights.
These TVs have two layers: one layer is the LED light source at the back of the TV. The other layer is the Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) itself.
In a LCD display, each individual crystal either allows or blocks light from the LED backlight to produce the picture.
OLED TVs are different. They only have a single layer.
This layer is basically a grid of lots of little tiny Organic LEDs that are individually capable of lighting up and turning off by themselves.
Because OLED TVs don’t have a backlight, they can be made thinner and lighter.
They don’t have extra components inside them either such as filters, diffusors, and polarizers, which LED TVs require.
Are OLED TVs light enough to wall mount?
OLED TVs are ideal for wall mounting. Because they’re much lighter and thinner than LED TVs, they can be mounted almost flush to a wall, almost like a water painting!
But if the OLED TV weighs between 30 and 100 pounds, you’d need to mount the TV wall bracket to the studs.
Mounting an OLED TV on a drywall alone at these weights isn’t advisable as it would be too heavy to be supported.
